International Women’s Day

I really enjoyed reading “The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives” by Lola Shoneyin, an interesting story about the issues encountered within a polygamous household in Nigeria set within modern times.

Following a visit to Nigeria with my mum a few years ago, we were driven home from the airport by a Nigerian taxi driver. My mum and he had the familiar conversation about the state of things in Nigeria. The conversation moved on to his experiences of growing up in a polygamous household, he was very vocal in his description of the politics involved and the effects on the children. Unsurprisingly he was very much against the practice. Reading “The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives” really reinforced his first hand viewpoint.

Today, Sunday 8th March 2015 is  International  Women’s day and I am posting this TED talk by Lola Shoneyin. It covers some important issues affecting international women today.

This month I am taking part in BlogHer’s monthly writing challenge.
